Yoni steaming provide gentle and effective support for women's wellness. It is an alternative health treatment and is respected by women and holistic healers around the world. Yoni steaming is the ancient practice whereby a woman squats or sits over steaming water containing herbs such as mugwort, rosemary, wormwood, and oregano while allowing the warmth of the herbal steam to softly infuse the exterior of the vagina.
A yoni steam is NOT the same as douching (which is a huge no-no). The purpose of a Yoni steam is NOT to clean your vagina. The potential benefits of yoni steaming are numerous and with a little caution can be practiced by most women.
For women who suffer with difficult moon or menstrual cycles, yoni steaming can significantly reduce pain, bloating and exhaustion associated with menstruation, as well as help to regulate irregular or absent moon cycles. After the medicinal herbs release their cleansing and healing oils into the hot water, they are carried via steam to the porous skin of the outer labia, where they are absorbed. The properties of the plants are carried through the bloodstream into the uterus, where they help to dislodge material that causes discomfort during menstruation.
For many women who suffer with uterine fibroids, ovarian cysts and endometriosis, yoni steaming help to support the uterus in shedding old blood. It can also help the uterus to expel any non-essential tissue or cells, including polyps, cysts or endometrium growing outside it. The result is a healthier womb, inside and out.
Yoni steaming promotes relaxation. While doing a yoni steam a woman sets aside 20-30 minutes of her time to focus on her own well-being and go inward. As she sits with herself, she often experiences a powerful release of pinned emotions and stress. This self-care routine provides a time to reflect, meditate, practice pranayama (a formal practice of controlling the breath, which is the source of our vital life force), bringing a profound sense of relaxation and emotional well-being.
The practice of yoni steaming gives women an opportunity to connect deeply with, celebrate and cherish all aspects of our bodies and their subtle energies, especially that of our yonis. As we learn to honor our wombs we deepen our relationship to the powerful feminine energy that each of us hold within.
Yoni steaming the exterior of your vagina draws out toxins and clears congestion from your womb. The gentle heat and moisture cause physical toxins to be released from cells into the lymphatic fluid, which is expelled from the body as sweat. To truly live in balance, we must detoxify our environment, our relationships and our own bodies.
Yoni steaming helps us to cultivate a profound sense of self-love and increases our self-confidence (especially, as it relates to our yonis), which helps us to feel more sexy and sensual. It also helps increase circulation and lubrication to our yoni, which can help increase libido and makes sex more enjoyable! Even the very act of steaming is slightly arousing!
For many women fertility challenges could be due to induration (hardened lining) and buildup of old material in the folds of the uterine walls. By breaking up this excess material and releasing it through menstruation, the uterine walls are prepared for a fertilized egg to attach and thrive.
The practice of yoni steaming is called a “bajo” by Mayan midwives and is the traditional treatment used to heal, cleanse and tone the reproductive system after birth. It is thought that steaming helps to clear any remaining material from the uterus after birth and encourage the tissue to tighten.
Although, there are many benefits to yoni steaming, there are times when steaming is not advised. It is best to wait a week after birth before steaming in order to give mama’s body some time to heal on its own. If you are pregnant or think you may be pregnant. When you are currently on your menstrual cycle. It is best to steam a week before and a few days after, when there is no longer a bloody show. If you have a vaginal infection or open wound avoid steaming. If you have an IUD or another contraceptive device in place. When trying to support infertility or a specific condition where there may be particular contraindication to be aware of. Steams that contain mugwort, should not be use by women who are breastfeeding.
Please Do Not use or add essential oils to your yoni steam. They may burn the delicate tissue of the genitals.
Yoni Steaming is easy to do at home. Place 1/3 cup of dry herbs or 3/4 cup of fresh herbs into a large pot and cover with 3 cups of lukewarm water (measurements are approximate). Bring your herbs and water to boil. Simmer on the stove for 10-15min. This will bring out more of the essential oils in the plants. Be careful when you sit to not burn the sensitive tissues of your vulva! You will probably need to let it steam off for a few moments before you can sit over it. Enjoy your steam for about 20 minutes. If you are able to, the ideal position is to squat. This brings the most open position to the pelvis, but may not be available for everyone or comfortable for long periods of time. Make sure you wear socks and wrap blankets closely around you and the pot, so all the heat stays inside. Rest and nurture yourself afterwards, stay warm, drink some herbal tea and move slowly. Use this time to relax, relate and release.
Yoni steaming is a great self-health practice to restore the health and balance of your feminine cycle, ease the transition through life phases, unlock the intimate magic of your womb and release toxic emotions such as stress, tension and stagnation.
